Where to Place a Humidity Meter During Coating Work

Take useful workshop temperature and humidity readings by placing the meter near the work and recording changes that affect application planning.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A temperature and humidity reading is useful only when it represents the conditions relevant to the job. A meter beside an open doorway or heating outlet may describe that small area rather than the coating bay. Consistent placement and a simple record make readings easier to interpret alongside the product instructions.

Choose a representative location

Follow the instrument’s placement and operating guidance. Position it where it can reflect the working environment without obstructing the installer or being exposed to spray, direct heat or other local influences. Do not place it on a wet panel and assume the reading describes the whole room.

Use the coating temperature and humidity guide to connect measurements to application planning. Ambient conditions and surface temperature are different observations and should be recorded separately when both matter.

Allow the instrument to settle

Moving a meter from storage into a different environment can require an adjustment period under its instructions. Check the battery, display and measurement range before relying on it. A precise-looking number is not a guarantee that the instrument is accurate or correctly used.

If a reading looks implausible, investigate placement and instrument condition. Do not simply select the value that makes the job appear ready to proceed.

Record changes at meaningful points

Take readings before application and when conditions materially change, such as after opening a large door or moving to another bay. The appropriate frequency depends on the job and environment. A single morning reading may not describe conditions during an afternoon installation.

Connect the record to the coating work schedule. If conditions move outside the product’s requirements, reassess the work rather than assuming the original plan remains valid.

Interpret the reading with the product guidance

Use the exact coating instructions to decide what the reading means for the job. Do not create a universal flash-time formula from humidity alone. Product, surface, application amount and other conditions can affect the observed working process.

The working time guide supports this judgement. A well-placed meter improves the information available to the installer; it does not replace a controlled test section or the need to inspect the coating as it is applied.
