Coating Estimates for Mixed Finishes: Use Separate Rates Where the Process Differs

A single average rate can hide different preparation and application needs across a mixed-finish project. Estimate the relevant surface groups separately when their approved processes differ.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

Group by actual exposed finish and work method, not merely by room or object name. The estimate should show the area and labour assumptions for each group, then reconcile them to the complete project scope.

Practical checks

  1. Identify the finish groups and approved treatment route.
  2. Estimate each group's area, preparation and application work.
  3. Sum the groups and review shared setup separately.

Example

Arithmetic example: twenty square metres of one finish require an illustrative rate of ten minutes per square metre, while ten square metres of another require twenty minutes. The combined application estimate is 400 minutes before other work.

Scope and limits

These rates are examples only. Do not use an average to authorize the same product on incompatible surfaces or to omit a finish-specific preparation requirement.
