Retiring a Coating Product Without Confusing Customers

Removing a coating from sale does not remove the needs of customers who already have it. A product retirement plan should account for remaining stock, instructions, support and any proposed replacement. Keep the old and new product identities distinct unless equivalence has actually been established.

Identify what is being retired

Clarify whether the change concerns a formula, pack size, kit or product name. These changes have different consequences. A packaging change may leave the application process unchanged; a formula change may require a different evaluation and instruction set.

Use formula change control when technical properties or use instructions change. Do not treat a new label as evidence that two products are interchangeable.

Account for stock across the supply chain

Record stock held by the brand, distributors and any other relevant locations using the available operational records. Confirm what remains suitable to supply under the existing product guidance. Do not create an artificial deadline that encourages customers to use questionable or poorly identified stock.

Preserve support for existing users

Keep the applicable instructions accessible and identify the retired product clearly. If a page remains online, explain its status and provide the relevant support route. Avoid redirecting all old instructions to a new product page that describes a different application process.

A replacement recommendation should state the differences that affect the user’s decision: suitable surfaces, preparation, application, care or supply format. Confirm compatibility instead of assuming that the new range position means the same technical role.

Close the operational loop

Update ordering systems, product codes, sales material and distributor guidance consistently. Keep retired references searchable internally so that support can understand older orders. Record the decision and the reason for retirement without inventing a technical failure where none has been established.
