Freight Allocation per Bottle: Explain the Effect of Carton Utilisation

Allocate coating freight costs transparently and show how carton utilisation changes the apparent cost per bottle.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Freight per bottle depends on shipment size, package configuration and the allocation method. Comparing two quotations without those details can make an inefficient shipment look like an expensive product.

Define the cost boundary

State which charges are included: main freight, handling, insurance or other applicable items. Keep taxes and duties identified separately where relevant. Use actual quotations or invoices rather than assuming every route has the same cost structure.

Use a simple same-SKU example

If an illustrative shipment costs 120 currency units and contains 24 identical bottles, freight is 5 per bottle. If the same quoted freight applies to 40 bottles in the approved configuration, it becomes 3 per bottle. Confirm that the larger quantity genuinely qualifies for the same charge before using that comparison.

Handle mixed shipments deliberately

Allocation basis Possible use
Unit count Comparable packs
Weight or volume Packs consuming different transport capacity
Direct charge Costs attributable to one specific item

Check the operational tradeoff

Higher carton utilisation may reduce freight per unit while increasing inventory or delaying an urgent order. Compare total service needs, packaging qualification and usable product life. Do not overpack an approved carton merely to improve a spreadsheet ratio. Record the allocation method so margin comparisons remain consistent across shipments.
