Keep dry storage and active exposure separate in a coating durability record when a trial pauses for transport, weather or equipment downtime.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A coating trial can run for six calendar months while spending a substantial part of that period in sheltered storage. Calendar age and active exposure answer different questions. Record both when the test is interrupted.
State whether the test concerns calendar service, washing cycles, outdoor exposure or another defined stress. Record each start, pause and restart. Include storage conditions and whether the sample was cleaned, covered or moved before storage.
Do not assume that storage has no effect. It simply represents a different condition from the planned active exposure and must remain visible in the history.
Imagine a panel observed for 180 calendar days, with 40 days stored indoors while equipment is repaired. The record contains 140 days of the specified outdoor exposure and 40 days under the stated storage conditions. Reporting only 180 days outdoors would be incorrect.
| Record | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Calendar age | Overall time since preparation |
| Active exposure | Time under the intended test condition |
| Pause history | Changes that may affect interpretation |
Inspect and document the sample before resuming. Keep any restart cleaning as a separate intervention. If one comparison sample experienced a different pause, do not treat the exposure histories as equivalent without explanation.
A paused trial may still be useful, especially for understanding an actual storage-and-use pattern. Its value depends on accurately describing that pattern. Avoid converting intermittent exposure into an uninterrupted lifetime claim or silently multiplying the observed result by a correction factor.
The exposure log should allow a reviewer to reconstruct what happened, not merely calculate elapsed time between two photographs.
