Bird-dropping residue can leave a visible etched outline after cleaning. Heavy-cut compound may improve some affected finishes, but it cannot guarantee removal of every mark. The useful objective is often to reduce the defect’s visibility while preserving the surrounding paint.
Follow a paint-compatible cleaning method and avoid scraping or rubbing dry material across the surface. Once the area is clean and dry, inspect it under a stable light. Separate remaining residue from a persistent change in the finish.
Record the affected area before correction. Include the outline and any cracking, lifting or other signs that warrant repair assessment. If the finish appears structurally compromised, stop abrasive work and seek advice from a qualified refinisher.
A shallow-looking mark is not a reliable depth measurement. Begin with a less aggressive suitable test when appropriate. If it improves the appearance sufficiently, stop escalating. If heavier cutting is justified, test the full process including refinement and compatible residue removal.
Do not pursue the deepest visible part simply because the outer ring has improved. Abrasive correction removes material from the surrounding surface; it does not fill the depression. The remaining mark may be a sensible stopping point even when more machine time would change it further.
– Photograph the cleaned baseline and the accepted result under comparable lighting.
– State whether the mark is removed from view, reduced or retained.
– Record the correction process and any excluded area.
– Avoid assigning an exact depth or safety margin without a suitable measurement method.
Check for a local difference in haze or texture around the corrected spot. A conspicuous polished patch can undermine the improvement achieved in the original defect.
Discuss retained etching clearly at handover and explain that protection and prompt future cleaning do not restore removed paint. The professional outcome is a controlled appearance improvement with honest limits, not an unconditional promise that heavy cut can erase every environmental mark.
