Coating Enquiry Forms: Separate Required Information from Optional Detail

An enquiry form should collect the information needed for the next useful decision without forcing customers to invent details they do not know. Provide an explicit unknown option where uncertainty is legitimate.

The key distinction

Product, surface and intended use are often more useful than a long list of speculative technical fields. The form can request additional documents later when they become relevant to the actual enquiry.

Practical checks

  1. Define the first decision the form supports.
  2. Make essential identity and context fields clear.
  3. Allow uncertain information to remain explicitly unknown.

Example

Illustrative example: a form requires a customer to choose a metal finish from unfamiliar options. The customer guesses, and the answer is later treated as verified. An unknown option and a follow-up document request would preserve accuracy.

Scope and limits

Do not interpret a completed form as technical approval. The supplier still needs to assess the information and resolve material uncertainties before recommending a coating system.
