Coating Crew Estimates: Person-Hours and Elapsed Hours Are Different

Person-hours measure combined labour, while elapsed hours measure time on the clock. A two-person coating task lasting three hours uses six person-hours if both people work throughout.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

The distinction matters for labour costing and site scheduling. Not every task can be accelerated by adding people, and some stages involve waiting or a single available work area. Record the actual staffing pattern rather than multiplying the full project duration by the largest crew size.

Practical checks

  1. Break the work into stages with their staffing requirements.
  2. Calculate labour and elapsed time separately.
  3. Check dependencies before assuming parallel work.

Example

Arithmetic example: two people work for three hours, then one person completes a one-hour inspection. Total labour is seven person-hours and elapsed time is four hours if the stages are consecutive.
