Testing many panels from one production batch does not establish variation across batches. State the number of batches as well as the number of specimens when describing the scope of a coating evaluation.

The sampling design should match the decision. A single-batch trial can answer useful application or comparison questions, while a consistency claim across production requires evidence that addresses that additional level. Keep batch identity linked to preparation and measurement records so the analysis can distinguish these sources of variation.
Illustrative example: twenty panels are prepared from one bottle and produce consistent readings. That is useful evidence about the tested setup, but it does not demonstrate consistency across twenty production batches. A clear report states the actual batch coverage without inflating the breadth of the trial.
This guide does not set a universal number of batches or guarantee future conformity. The appropriate programme depends on the product, process and decision. Avoid using a large specimen count to imply a broader production history than the study actually includes.
