Coating Inspection Values: Do Not Round Before the Final Decision

Early rounding can change a calculated result or obscure a borderline decision. Preserve the original measurement precision through the analysis.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Practical approach

Store raw values, perform calculations consistently and apply the agreed reporting rule at the end. Keep acceptance rules explicit.

Averaging already-rounded values can differ from rounding the average of the original readings, especially with a small dataset.

Decision limits

Do not add meaningless digits either. Report precision supported by the method and uncertainty, while retaining the original data for review.
