Free Applicators in Coating Orders: Free to the Buyer Still Has a Cost

An included applicator may improve a coating offer, but its cost belongs in the promotion model. Evaluate the change in complete-order contribution rather than treating a free item as economically invisible.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

The relevant cost can include the item, additional packing, handling and any change in the shipping format. The benefit should also be defined: improved completion of the intended kit, a measured conversion change or another specific outcome. An attractive idea is not evidence that the promotion pays for itself.

Practical checks

  1. Calculate the added variable cost per eligible order.
  2. Define the sales or customer outcome the promotion is intended to improve.
  3. Compare a suitable period or controlled offer while keeping other changes visible.

Example

Arithmetic example: an included item and its handling add 1.50 per order. Across 200 eligible orders, that adds 300 in cost before considering any sales effect. The business needs enough additional contribution or another justified benefit to support the offer.

Scope and limits

The figures are illustrative and do not describe NANOLAB accessory prices. Do not assume every order is incremental because a promotion was running. Keep existing demand, new demand and any change in basket composition separate when interpreting the result.
