Coating Discount Codes: Measure Redemption and Incremental Sales Separately

A redeemed discount code proves that a code was used, not that the discount created the sale. Evaluate the promotion against a credible baseline before attributing every discounted order to additional demand.

The key distinction

Some customers may have purchased without the offer, while others may change their timing or basket. The analysis should distinguish tracked transactions from estimated incremental transactions. This prevents a large redemption count from hiding a reduction in contribution on orders that would have occurred anyway.

Practical checks

  1. Record code use, net revenue and order contribution.
  2. Define a comparison approach that accounts for other relevant changes.
  3. Report the assumptions behind any estimate of incremental demand.

Example

Illustrative example: a coating store records 100 code redemptions during a promotion. It cannot claim 100 additional customers solely from that count. The useful review compares eligible demand, timing and contribution with an appropriate baseline and acknowledges uncertainty where the counterfactual is not directly observed.

Scope and limits

Do not claim precise causation from an uncontrolled before-and-after comparison. This guide does not prescribe a discount amount or guarantee a sales response. A promotion can be commercially useful, but its evidence should match the question: tracking, conversion, customer acquisition or contribution.
