Customer acquisition cost needs a defined numerator and a defined group of new customers. Mixing repeat orders with first-time buyers can make acquisition appear cheaper than it was.

Decide which acquisition costs and time window belong in the calculation. Then count customers who meet the agreed new-customer definition, avoiding duplicate identities and repeat purchases. Keep the result separate from cost per order, which answers a different question and can change as existing customers purchase again.
Arithmetic example: a hypothetical campaign costs 1,200 and is associated with 40 qualifying new customers. The scoped acquisition cost is 30 per new customer. Dividing by 80 total orders would produce 15 per order, but that is not the same metric if some orders came from existing buyers.
The example is arithmetic, not a marketing benchmark. Attribution may be uncertain, and costs outside the chosen scope remain outside the result. Do not use a low acquisition figure as proof of profitability without considering the contribution and retention of the acquired customers.
