Coating Adhesion Reports: Identify Where the Failure Occurred

An adhesion value alone may not explain the failure. The location of separation within the coating, interface or substrate changes its interpretation.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Practical approach

Ask the laboratory to report the observed failure mode using the applicable method. Review photographs and specimen details with the numerical result.

A weak substrate can fail before the interface of interest, limiting what the test demonstrates about that interface.

Decision limits

Do not rank coatings from numbers alone when the failure modes differ. Confirm that the results address the same technical question.
