Polishing a Fibreglass Car Body: Confirm Paint or Gelcoat Before Cutting

A fibreglass body can carry paint, gelcoat or a repaired finish. The substrate name alone does not identify the outer layer that a polishing process will abrade.

Identify the outer finish

Obtain build or repair information where available and inspect the actual surface. Keep uncertain sections in the record. A colour match across the body does not prove that every panel has the same finishing history.

Review the intended product use

Check that the chosen polish, pad and process are suitable for the identified finish. Do not transfer a painted-metal recipe or a marine gelcoat routine solely because the body is fibreglass. Each named system has its own intended use.

Assess practical access and evidence

Map contours, edges and repaired areas. Confirm the limits of any thickness measurement being used. Where useful evidence is missing, choose a conservative trial or seek the appropriate specialist assessment rather than assuming a correction margin.

Inspect and document the result

Compare the dry test area after approved residue removal. Record the achieved appearance and remaining defects before extending the process. Keep structural concerns outside the cosmetic polishing scope.

Frequently asked question

Does a fibreglass body always mean the exposed surface is gelcoat?

No. Confirm the actual outer finish and repair history before selecting the polishing system.
