Replicates and Repeat Readings in Ceramic Coating Tests

Several readings from one coated patch are not the same as several independently prepared test patches. Keep those two forms of repetition separate.

Define the experimental unit

Record what received an independent preparation and application: a panel, a patch or another suitable sample. Repeated measurements on that same unit can assess measurement stability, but they do not create new independent installations.

Label the records clearly

Give each prepared unit its own identifier and keep repeated readings nested under it. Include surface history and application conditions. Do not combine ten observations from one panel into a statement that ten separate coating samples were tested.

Use the distinction in decisions

If installations vary, investigate preparation and application alongside the product. If readings vary on the same unit, investigate the measurement method. A useful trial needs to know which uncertainty it is addressing before increasing the number of data points.

Frequently asked question

Are ten photographs of one water drop ten independent coating tests?

No. They are observations of the same event and should be recorded as such.
