Baseline Gloss Drift: Keep a Reference During Coating Trials

A changing gloss reference can distort a coating comparison. Keep baseline observations and the measurement conditions identified throughout the trial.

Record the starting finish

Measure or photograph each clean, prepared sample before coating using a consistent supported method. Surface polishing and texture influence the baseline. Comparing final values alone can hide important differences that existed before the products were applied.

Keep a reference check

Use an appropriate stable reference according to the instrument’s instructions and retain the initial panel records. Record changes in lighting, settings, operator or surface cleaning. Do not treat a drift in the measuring setup as a coating improvement or loss.

Compare the change honestly

Interpret final observations alongside the starting condition and reference behaviour. Where a measurement is unreliable, report that limitation instead of ranking products by small unsupported differences. A useful summary explains both the observed result and the conditions under which it was obtained.

Frequently asked question

Can the highest final gloss number identify the best coating?

Not by itself. Starting finish, measurement method and the intended product role must be considered.
