Substituting a Polishing Pad Mid-Job: Record and Re-Test

A replacement pad with a similar description may change the correction result. Treat the substitution as a process change rather than an invisible stock decision.

Identify the replacement

Record its manufacturer, intended tool, construction and condition. Colour or stated firmness does not establish equivalence with the original pad. Confirm compatibility with the backing and machine before bringing the replacement to the vehicle.

Repeat a small meaningful test

Keep the liquid, section and inspection conditions consistent where appropriate. Check defect removal, residual haze, control and wipe-off. If the replacement needs a different finishing step, include that change in the work plan rather than discovering it across the entire car.

Update the job record

Mark which panels used each combination and retain the revised acceptance observation. Replenish the intended stock and review why the substitution was needed. A tidy final finish is valuable, but traceability makes any later question easier to resolve.

Frequently asked question

Can a pad of the same colour be substituted without testing?

No. Colour codes are manufacturer-specific and do not establish the same performance or compatibility.
