Polishing a Repainted Panel: Questions for the Bodyshop

Confirm paint-system instructions, cure status and repair history before polishing a refinished panel or applying its final protection.

A repainted panel introduces information that cannot be inferred from appearance alone. The paint system, curing process and repair history influence when and how it should be polished. Obtain the bodyshop’s guidance before applying a generic detailing recipe.

Ask specific questions

Identify the coating system and the repair date, then ask for the applicable polishing and protection instructions. Dry-to-touch does not by itself establish readiness for every abrasive or coating process.

Do not substitute a universal waiting period for the paint manufacturer’s requirements. Different systems and curing conditions can call for different procedures.

Inspect the repair in context

Look for transitions, texture, vulnerable edges and differences from neighbouring panels. Record existing defects before work.

A higher gauge reading may indicate a different coating stack, but it does not establish that all the additional thickness is clear coat available for correction.

Use a separate test

Treat the repair as its own surface where its response differs. Select a documented pad and liquid system and inspect after the specified residue-removal process.

Stop if the finish behaves unexpectedly. Grabbing, unusual marking or instability should trigger reassessment rather than stronger compound or more pressure.

Coordinate the next treatment

Confirm when and how wax, sealant or ceramic protection may be applied. The polishing schedule and protection schedule are related but not necessarily identical.

Keep the bodyshop’s written instructions with the job record and communicate any limitations to the owner. If suitable guidance is unavailable, seek clarification before irreversible material removal.

A refinished panel can often be detailed successfully, but the professional starting point is its actual coating system. Matching the surrounding gloss should not override cure requirements, repair boundaries or uncertainty about the material being removed.
