Private Label Metal Coatings: A Customer Surface Questionnaire

Build a surface questionnaire for private label metal coatings so enquiries identify the finish, exposure, cleaning process and performance goal.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

An enquiry for a private label metal coating is incomplete if it names only the base metal. Chrome plating, clear-coated aluminium and lacquered brass present different outer surfaces. A short questionnaire can collect the information needed for a useful manufacturing discussion.

Ask what the coating will touch

Request the base material, exposed finish, manufacturer and finish code where known. Include previous treatments and cleaning products. Ask for clear photographs and label unknown information as unknown rather than forcing the customer to select a guess.

A useful question is: Is the surface bare metal, plated, anodised, painted, powder coated, lacquered or another finish? The answer should lead to documentation or a sample, not replace it.

Define the actual use

Record indoor or outdoor location, water exposure, heat, repeated handling and the normal cleaning method. Identify food-contact, electrical, mechanical or other specialised functions that require separate assessment. Do not market a general decorative coating as approved for those functions without evidence.

Ask what success means to the buyer: less visible handling residue, easier cleaning, unchanged sheen or a specified protective performance. These goals may require different evaluation methods.

Request a representative sample

Determine whether a production offcut or spare component is available. Record its relationship to the intended installation. A plain metal coupon may be useful early in development but cannot automatically represent a proprietary factory finish.

Agree on appearance and cleaning acceptance criteria before testing. This avoids approving a result that beads water but changes the finish the buyer wanted to preserve.

Route the enquiry accurately

Use the questionnaire to identify a supported product, a development discussion or an application that needs a different specialist. Do not promise a formula before reviewing the answers. Sending NANOLAB a precise surface and use description makes the response more useful than a broad request for a coating suitable for all metals.
