Review coating test methods when they stop distinguishing meaningful differences or no longer represent the customer's actual use.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A test can remain repeatable while becoming irrelevant. If the customer problem, product system or exposure changes, a familiar method may no longer answer the decision it was originally designed to support.
| Signal | Question |
|---|---|
| Every sample scores the maximum | Is the method sensitive enough? |
| Rankings change with minor handling differences | Is the procedure sufficiently controlled? |
| Good test results accompany poor field outcomes | Does the test represent the relevant failure mode? |
| The product’s intended use changed | Does the endpoint still matter? |
Write the customer requirement, measured property and proposed link between them. For example, an initial beading demonstration may be useful for showing water behaviour but weak as the sole predictor of long-term cleaning effort. The method may remain valid for one purpose while being retired from another.
A poor product result is not evidence that the test is bad. Investigate repeatability, relevance and controls before changing the procedure. Preserve the original results and document why a revision is justified.
Where practical, evaluate representative samples with both old and proposed methods. Determine whether they measure the same property or different ones. Do not invent a conversion between scores unless the relationship has been established adequately.
A brand may retain a quick water demonstration for customer education while adding a defined cleaning-effort trial for maintenance claims. The first method is not discarded as useless; its role is narrowed to what it actually shows.
Record the procedure, acceptance criteria, equipment and effective date. Keep historical results labelled with the method used so old and new scores are not silently mixed.
A healthy testing programme changes when the question changes. The goal is not a permanent collection of impressive tests, but a set of methods that reliably supports current product decisions.
