The Cost of a Coating Return: Model Product, Support and Rework Separately

Model the operational cost of a coating return using product, freight, support and rework while separating confirmed causes from assumptions.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The cost of a coating return is rarely limited to the bottle. Freight, technical support, replacement handling and installer rework can dominate the total. A simple cost model helps a brand prioritise prevention without treating every complaint as a confirmed product defect.

Separate case status from cost

Classify the event as reported, under investigation or resolved. Record the established cause separately from the customer’s initial explanation. Costs can be incurred even when the product is later found suitable, so maintain both operational and technical records.

Cost component Include when actually incurred
Product Replacement or discarded stock at a consistent cost basis
Logistics Return and replacement handling or freight
Support Staff time investigating and communicating
Rework Agreed corrective work and associated materials

A hypothetical calculation

A case uses 15 currency units of replacement stock, 20 of logistics and forty-five minutes of support at 24 units per hour. Before any rework, the recorded cost is 15 + 20 + 18 = 53 units. These are illustrative assumptions, not NANOLAB prices or commitments.

Use frequency carefully

Calculate case rates over a defined shipment cohort and follow-up period. Recent deliveries have had less time to generate complaints than older deliveries. Keep orders, bottles and installations as separate denominators rather than switching between them to obtain a smaller percentage.

Prioritise the preventable causes

Review whether unclear instructions, wrong product selection, packaging damage or a confirmed batch issue drives the workload. A small label correction may prevent repeated support cases; a technical fault may require a different response. The cost model does not determine responsibility or warranty coverage.

Use the result to choose a corrective action and measure whether similar cases decline after implementation. A return model is most useful when it improves the process, not when it becomes a reason to dismiss legitimate customer concerns.
