Static and Advancing Contact Angles: Compare the Same Wetting Condition

A static contact angle and an advancing contact angle describe different measurement conditions. Keep the method label attached to the value when comparing coating reports.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

KRUSS describes advancing angle in relation to a moving wetting boundary. A static image does not automatically provide the same quantity, even when both results use water on the same material.

Practical checks

  1. Identify the reported angle type.
  2. Record the dosing and analysis method.
  3. Ask the laboratory whether the values support the intended comparison.

Example

Illustrative example: a table ranks a static result from one supplier against an advancing result from another. The larger value is not automatically evidence of a more water-repellent coating under equivalent conditions.

Scope and limits

Do not relabel an angle to simplify a marketing chart. The complete method and tested surface remain necessary, and neither value alone establishes durability or cleaning performance.
