Stainless Handrails: Coating Suitability Includes Function

Handrails are functional contact surfaces. A protective coating proposal should account for their finish, use and cleaning requirements, not only appearance.

Describe the installation

Identify indoor or outdoor exposure, material grade where known and any factory finish. Note frequent wetting, hand contact and required cleaning products. Include joints and brackets in the inspection, and refer loose or deteriorating components to the appropriate maintenance specialist.

Confirm application-specific suitability

Ask whether the exact product is suitable for the handrail’s intended use, including any relevant grip or functional requirements. Do not infer that suitability from a test on a decorative panel. Assess an approved sample after the required cure for appearance and feel.

Maintain the record

Provide the cleaning team with the accepted routine and preserve the component manufacturer’s requirements. A coating does not replace structural inspection or repair. If the surface develops staining or a changed feel, record the products used and seek assessment before adding another layer or polishing the rail.
