Shear-Thinning Coatings: Why Pouring Behaviour Is Not a Fixed Number

A shear-thinning material's apparent viscosity changes with shear rate. A single informal pouring observation does not fully characterize that behaviour.

Practical approach

Use an appropriate defined method and record the conditions relevant to the process being evaluated.

Behaviour while resting in a container can differ from behaviour during dispensing or application.

Decision limits

Do not assume every coating is shear-thinning, or use that term to excuse an unexplained change. Confirm the formulation's expected behaviour.
