Repainted Panel Coating: Questions for the Refinisher and Installer

Gather refinish-system information and approved timing instead of applying a universal waiting rule.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A repainted panel should be assessed using information about the actual repair system. There is no sound basis for applying one universal waiting rule to every refinish situation. Gather the relevant finish information before asking for a coating recommendation.

Identify the repair

Ask which panels were refinished, when the work was completed and what guidance the repairer supplied. Obtain the refinish-system information where available. Record uncertainty instead of treating the vehicle's original paint specification as a description of the repaired area.

Confirm the applicable instructions

Review the refinish manufacturer's or repairer's guidance alongside the proposed coating's current requirements. Ask for clarification when the intended application or timing is unclear. A recommendation based only on elapsed days may miss important details about the actual finish and repair process.

Keep the repaired area identifiable

For example, a single repaired door should remain marked in the surface record even if it visually matches the rest of the car. Define any inspection, preparation or compatibility review required for that panel. Explain the agreed scope to the owner and retain the information for future care. The objective is not to delay every job unnecessarily; it is to make the treatment decision using the correct finish history rather than a rule borrowed from an unrelated repair.

A question sheet for the refinisher and coating installer

Use separate fields for the repair system, repair date, refinisher's release guidance, proposed preparation and coating supplier's recommendation. Ask each party to answer within their own area of responsibility. This article focuses on the communication record that follows the initial repainted-panel assessment.

Do not treat dry to touch as a universal approval for polishing or coating. Keep any conditions attached to the refinisher's answer and pass them intact to the installer. If the parties' instructions appear inconsistent, resolve that conflict before treatment. The final decision should connect the exact repaired panel to the guidance used, rather than relying on a remembered waiting period from a different repair.
