Percentage Improvement from a Zero Baseline: Use an Absolute Result Instead

A conventional percentage-change calculation divides by the baseline. When that baseline is zero, the percentage is undefined, so report the relevant absolute change and context instead of inventing an improvement percentage.

The key distinction

Very small baselines can also produce dramatic percentages that need careful explanation. Keep the original and final values visible so the reader can judge practical significance.

Practical checks

  1. Check the denominator before calculating.
  2. Report both values with units.
  3. Use a justified alternative summary when the usual percentage is unsuitable.

Example

Arithmetic example: an observed count changes from zero to two. The absolute increase is two; it is not a finite two-hundred-percent increase under the usual formula.

Scope and limits

Do not replace zero with an arbitrary small number to obtain a marketable percentage. This guide does not select a statistical model; it prevents an invalid arithmetic claim in a coating comparison.
