Nano Coating Aluminium Window Frames: Anodised and Painted Systems

Assess anodised and painted aluminium window frames for nano coating, including finish approval, seals, drainage paths and practical access for maintenance.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

An aluminium window frame is an assembly, not just a metal surface. It may include anodising or paint, sealants, gaskets, drainage openings and moving hardware. A nano coating proposal needs to define the exposed finish and protect the functions of the whole window.

Obtain the frame specification

Record the system supplier, finish code and care requirements. Distinguish painted and powder-coated frames from anodised aluminium. Ask about restrictions on cleaners and aftermarket treatments, particularly where the building or window supplier provides its own warranty conditions.

The Aluminium Anodizers Council notes that cleaning conditions influence anodised finishes and that harsh chemistry can cause damage. Treat compatibility as a complete process involving cleaner, concentration, contact time and temperature, rather than relying on a single pH label.

Survey access and nearby materials

Mark frame faces proposed for coating. Exclude seals, hinges, tracks and drainage openings unless the exact treatment is approved for their function. Protect adjacent glass coatings and stonework from preparation runoff. Do not use a coating job as a reason to obstruct a drainage path.

Plan safe access through the building’s normal maintenance arrangements. If exterior frames cannot be inspected and cleaned safely, resolve access before quoting a treatment that depends on later care.

Trial a representative frame section

Choose a location with the same finish, exposure and cleaning history as the main project. Record appearance before preparation, after preparation and after the coating cure. Include a normal cleaning cycle in the approval, then inspect the frame in both sun and shade where applicable.

Keep the specification maintainable

State the approved surfaces and cleaning method in the handover. Existing chalking, staining or damaged paint needs its own assessment; coating should not be used to conceal an unresolved finish problem. Review sheltered lower corners and water-collecting details during routine maintenance. The aim is a workable surface-care improvement within the frame manufacturer’s requirements, not a replacement for drainage, seal or hardware maintenance.
