Measuring Coating Levelling Effort with a Repeatable Wipe Protocol

Compare coating wipe-off effort using a fixed area, towel protocol and accepted finish instead of a vague easy-to-buff rating.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

“Easy to buff” can mean low hand resistance, few towel passes or little time spent finding high spots. Those are related but different observations. A useful workshop protocol measures the complete levelling task against an agreed finish.

Define the area and endpoint

Use comparable panels with a marked measurement area outside the treated surface. Follow each coating’s application instructions and record product amount, timing and conditions. Define the endpoint as an accepted dry appearance under the specified lights, not simply the moment the first towel stops moving.

Measure Record consistently
Active wipe time Time actually spent levelling
Inspection time Time checking the finish
Rework Additional treatment needed to pass
Towel demand Clean faces and towels consumed

Control the consumables

Use the same suitable towel type and condition for comparable steps, while respecting any product-specific requirements. Standardise folding and replacement rules. A saturated towel can make a coating appear harder to remove, while a fresh towel used only for one candidate creates an unfair advantage.

Record installer-rated effort separately from measured time. A simple anchored scale can distinguish light wiping, noticeable resistance and repeated corrective wiping. It is a subjective workshop observation, not a measured friction coefficient.

Interpret a complete example

In an illustrative trial, A needs ninety seconds of wiping and sixty seconds of inspection; B needs 110 seconds of wiping and twenty seconds of inspection. B has the slower wipe but the shorter accepted levelling task. If A also needs occasional rework, that belongs in the operational comparison.

Protect the meaning of the result

Repeat on independent panels and rotate product order. Do not increase pressure to force a difficult result into the target time. Stop and review the process if the surface or towel begins to behave unexpectedly.

The final report should show time, finish and consumable use together. This lets a workshop choose a coating around actual labour and consistency rather than a single enthusiastic description.
