Nano Coatings on Floors: Suitability Includes Traction

A floor is a walking surface, so treatment decisions must account for its function. A coating that looks good on a vertical panel is not automatically appropriate underfoot.

Define the floor and conditions

Identify the material, texture and existing finish. Describe whether the area is wet, used barefoot or exposed to oils and frequent cleaning. Include ramps, steps and transitions where relevant. This information belongs in the initial enquiry, not as an afterthought.

Require application-specific confirmation

Ask the floor manufacturer and coating supplier whether the system is suitable for the intended use and what testing or evidence supports it. Hydrophobic behaviour does not establish slip performance. If the required suitability cannot be confirmed, keep the floor outside the project and use its existing approved care system.

Preserve maintenance responsibilities

Do not use a coating as a substitute for correcting damaged flooring, drainage or unsafe cleaning practices. Keep any approved treatment’s care instructions available to the cleaning team. If the feel or traction changes, arrange assessment rather than adding another product. The treated-area map should clearly show which floors remain excluded.
