Heavy Cut and Intermittent Pad Rotation: Diagnose Uneven Correction

On a free-spinning dual-action polisher, rotation can become intermittent when contact, pressure or panel shape changes.

On a free-spinning dual-action polisher, rotation can become intermittent when contact, pressure or panel shape changes. During heavy cutting this may coincide with uneven correction. It is a reason to inspect the working system, not automatically increase the speed dial.

Confirm what the machine is doing

Identify the machine type first. Free-spinning and gear-driven tools do not respond to load in the same way. Observe rotation using a method recommended by the machine manufacturer and keep attention on tool control. Do not touch moving parts or use loose objects as rotation indicators.

Note whether the interruption occurs on flat paint, a curved shoulder, near a panel edge or at the end of your reach. The location can help distinguish excessive pressure or a tilted pad from an unsuitable working footprint.

Relate movement to the result

After a controlled section, remove residue and inspect the coverage pattern. Uneven defect removal may correspond to areas where the pad was tilted, stalled or moved too quickly. However, differences in starting defects and paint condition can produce a similar appearance. Compare the pattern with the original inspection record.

Re-establish comfortable access, suitable pad contact and the manufacturer’s working pressure. If a smaller compatible tool is needed, test it separately rather than assume the same cycle will apply. Avoid leaning on a large pad to force it around a tight curve.

Do not confuse rotation with acceptance

A continuously rotating pad does not guarantee that the target defects have been removed, and rotation speed alone does not quantify cut. The deciding evidence is the cleaned surface and the stability of the complete process.

Record the geometry and technique change that restored consistent work. For example, splitting one curved section into two controlled approaches may be more useful than documenting a higher dial setting.

If the machine behaves unexpectedly on a suitable flat area with a compatible pad, stop and check the equipment according to its instructions. Resolve the cause before using heavier correction to compensate for an uncertain tool response.
