Gloss Measurements on Brushed Surfaces: Record the Direction

Directional texture can make appearance measurements dependent on instrument orientation. A comparison should state how the measurement direction relates to the surface pattern.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Practical approach

Mark a repeatable orientation and measure consistently. If direction is part of the question, report each orientation separately.

Rotating the instrument between visits on brushed metal can create an apparent change unrelated to the treatment being assessed.

Decision limits

Do not average opposing directions without explaining the method. Preserve the information needed to understand the observed appearance.
