Gloss Measurement: Keep the Instrument Footprint Inside the Test Area

A gloss reading can include surrounding material if the measurement footprint crosses the test boundary. The visible opening is not always the full relevant area.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Practical approach

Check the instrument's aperture and geometry requirements. Make the test patch large enough and position the instrument consistently within it.

A narrow coated strip beside an untreated area may yield a mixed reading rather than the gloss of either finish alone.

Decision limits

Do not use edge-straddling readings to calculate a coating improvement. Redesign the test area before comparing results.
