The first failed compounding section often contains the best evidence of what changed.

The first failed compounding section often contains the best evidence of what changed. Continuing across several panels before recording it can erase the starting conditions and spread the problem. Capture a small, factual troubleshooting record early.
Use descriptions such as ‘residue becomes difficult to remove after two adjacent sections’ or ‘fine haze remains after the accepted refinement stage’. Avoid conclusions such as ‘bad abrasives’ unless supported by appropriate testing.
Photograph the cleaned surface and, where useful, the stopped pad and residue. Include a panel landmark and consistent lighting. Record the exact products and pad model, not only generic categories such as medium foam or blue compound.
| Field | Useful detail |
| — | — |
| Surface | Panel, finish history and preparation |
| Equipment | Machine, backing plate and pad |
| Product | Name, batch and storage concern if any |
| Process | Loading, section size and cycle |
| Symptom | When it begins and where it appears |
| Inspection | Cleaner, towel and light |
| Next test | One variable changed and its result |
Keep the first reference area available until the cause is understood. Repeatedly polishing it can remove the very evidence needed to compare possible explanations.
If a clean equivalent pad or corrected preparation resolves the issue, record that outcome without overstating the mechanism. If it persists, share the relevant product and process details with the supplier or refinisher.
Do not send customer-identifying information when a close photograph and technical description are sufficient. The technical question is usually about the surface and system, not the vehicle owner’s identity.
The log should lead to a decision: restore the process, change a supported component, limit the scope or stop for specialist assessment. Its value is in shortening the path from symptom to evidence, rather than collecting a long narrative after the job has already become difficult to diagnose.
