Coating XPS Reports: Distinguish Atomic Percent from Weight Percent

Atomic percentage counts relative atoms, while weight percentage describes relative mass. The two quantities are not interchangeable.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Practical approach

Preserve the reported units and ask the analyst which conversion, if any, is justified for the sample and method.

A table headed atomic percent cannot be copied into a product specification headed weight percent without a valid calculation and scope.

Decision limits

Do not infer a formulation recipe from a surface-analysis percentage table.
