Comparing Coating Water Behaviour Without Misleading Results

Compare water behaviour on coated surfaces under consistent cleaning, flow and viewing conditions while recognising the test's limits.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A water comparison can reveal a change worth investigating, but uncontrolled demonstrations can be misleading. Panel angle, contamination, water flow and maintenance products can all influence the appearance of droplets and runoff.

Prepare a meaningful comparison

Use comparable clean areas and identify their treatment history. Do not compare a freshly topped bonnet with an untreated dirty door and attribute the entire difference to the original coating.

Respect the product’s curing and first-water or first-wash instructions. Do not expose a fresh installation to a demonstration that conflicts with those requirements.

Keep the test conditions consistent

Use similar water delivery, panel orientation and observation timing. Record whether the surface was recently washed, decontaminated or treated with a drying aid. Photograph the full test area so a close-up does not conceal uneven behaviour nearby.

Repeat a surprising result after checking for residue and contamination. Avoid progressively stronger cleaning solely to obtain a more dramatic beading pattern.

Interpret the result narrowly

Water behaviour describes one aspect of the surface at that moment. It does not prove scratch resistance, total coating thickness or remaining service life. A maintenance decision should also consider appearance, cleaning response, installation history and the exact product.

Read hydrophobic behaviour and horizontal versus vertical panels. Bring consistent observations to NANOLAB when behaviour changes persist after the appropriate maintenance process.
