Coating Thickness on Plastic: Why a Metal-Substrate Gauge May Not Help

A gauge designed around a metal substrate cannot automatically measure a coating on plastic. The measurement principle must suit the entire material system.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Practical approach

Identify the substrate, coating layers and expected thickness range. Ask a qualified laboratory or instrument supplier which method can resolve the question.

A bumper reading absent from an ordinary paint gauge does not mean the bumper has no paint or protection.

Decision limits

Do not substitute an arbitrary thickness from adjacent metal panels. Treat unmeasured plastic areas as unknown and choose work methods accordingly.
