Practical approach
Follow the laboratory's instructions for contact, packaging and storage. Keep an identifiable reference where appropriate.
Touching the area to be analysed can introduce a surface history unrelated to the coating question.
Decision limits
Do not clean the specimen improvisationally before analysis; that may remove the evidence being investigated.
