Coating Support Case Categories: Separate Symptoms from Confirmed Causes

Categorize what the customer reports separately from the cause established by investigation. A symptom such as streaking should not automatically be coded as an application error or a formulation defect.

The key distinction

Keeping two fields allows support trends to remain useful while cases are unresolved. It also prevents an early assumption from becoming a misleading statistic about customers, installers or products.

Practical checks

  1. Record the reported symptom in concrete terms.
  2. Leave cause unconfirmed until evidence supports it.
  3. Update the cause field with the basis for the conclusion.

Example

Illustrative example: several reports mention haze, but their investigations identify different conditions. A symptom trend can guide triage, while the cause analysis guides the appropriate corrective actions.

Scope and limits

Do not force unresolved cases into a convenient cause category to complete a chart. Unknown is a valid status until the relevant technical evidence is available.
