Coating Order Profitability: Allocate Shared Costs Without Double Counting

A multi-product coating order can share packaging, handling and delivery costs. Allocate those costs consistently for product analysis while ensuring the whole-order calculation includes each cost only once.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

The allocation method should fit the question. Weight, volume, value or another operational driver may be relevant, but each creates a different product-level view. The total allocated amount must reconcile to the actual shared cost so that a detailed spreadsheet does not accidentally inflate or omit the order's expense.

Practical checks

  1. Identify costs charged once per order and costs charged per unit.
  2. Choose and document an appropriate allocation basis.
  3. Reconcile the sum of allocated costs to the original order total.

Example

Arithmetic example: a hypothetical order incurs 12 in shared packing cost. If three product lines each receive the full 12, the analysis records 36 rather than 12. Allocating the 12 across the lines preserves the total while allowing a stated product-level comparison.

Scope and limits

This guide does not prescribe a universal accounting policy. Different decisions may require different allocation views, and those views should be labelled. Avoid rejecting or promoting a coating SKU based on an allocation method that has not been explained or reconciled.
