Coating Inspection Photos: Record Light Position as Well as Lamp Identity

Reusing the same lamp does not guarantee the same inspection view. Its position, direction and distance relative to the surface can change what the observer or camera sees.

The key distinction

A repeatable inspection record describes the arrangement, not merely the equipment name. Marking the intended viewing geometry can help the next reviewer recreate the comparison without guessing from a cropped photograph.

Practical checks

  1. Record the lamp, surface and camera positions.
  2. Keep exposure and relevant viewing settings with the images.
  3. Explain any intentional change in arrangement between comparisons.

Example

Illustrative example: a reflection becomes visible after a lamp is moved. The report records that change instead of presenting the new image as proof that the coating itself deteriorated between photographs.

Scope and limits

Choose an arrangement appropriate to the actual inspection method. This checklist does not specify a universal lux level, diagnose a defect from a photograph or replace a physical assessment when one is needed.
