Coating Calibration Curves: Extrapolation Beyond the Standards Needs Justification

A calibration curve established over one range should not automatically be extended beyond its standards. A result outside that range needs an appropriate analytical response rather than a hidden software extrapolation.

The key distinction

The relationship between response and quantity may change outside the validated region. Preserve the standards, model and range so a reviewer can see whether the reported sample result is supported.

Practical checks

  1. Identify the validated calibration range.
  2. Check where the sample response falls.
  3. Ask the laboratory to apply the method's approved response to an out-of-range sample.

Example

Illustrative example: all standards lie below a sample's response, but software still calculates a concentration. The calculated number is not automatically a validated measurement merely because it appears in the output table.

Scope and limits

Do not dilute or prepare samples through an improvised method. The laboratory should determine an appropriate procedure and report any remaining limitation.
