Coated Wheels After a Tyre Change: Inspect Handling Marks

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

After a tyre change, inspect coated wheels for handling marks, lubricant residue, altered balance weights and damage to existing finishes. Do this before automatically booking a new coating service. Some visible changes may only need suitable cleaning; others require a different response.

Record the condition promptly

Photograph the wheel faces and accessible lips in dry, consistent light. Note marks around the rim, centre cap and weight areas. If pre-service photographs exist, use them to compare the same locations rather than relying on memory alone.

Ask what products contacted the wheels during the service. Clean residue using a method approved for the wheel finish and coating. Do not use polishing compound simply to see whether a mark disappears, because that can change both the finish and the evidence.

Separate the next steps

Removable residue calls for cleaning and inspection. A damaged coating may need a defined local renewal process. Scratched paint, exposed metal or a damaged wheel component needs appropriate assessment and repair. A cosmetic coating is not a structural or paint repair.

If new weights have been fitted, update any record of coated and excluded areas. Their position can change the appearance of the inner barrel without indicating an unrelated coating defect.

For future tyre work, inform the service provider that the wheels are coated and share relevant care restrictions. This does not replace their normal procedures, but it reduces uncertainty about cleaning products and cosmetic expectations. The best handover leaves both parties with a clear condition record and a specific plan for any issue found, rather than an unsupported claim that every new-looking mark must have the same cause.
