Bulk Coating Transfer Hold-Up: Calculate the Liquid Remaining in the Line

A transfer line can retain liquid after a filling stage. Estimate that volume from the actual internal geometry when it matters to material planning, then verify the approved process rather than assuming every supplied litre reaches finished bottles.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

The key distinction

For a simple cylindrical line, internal volume equals pi multiplied by the internal radius squared and length. Fittings and equipment cavities may add volume that needs separate consideration.

Practical checks

  1. Use internal, not external, dimensions.
  2. Calculate the line and relevant component volumes.
  3. Confirm the actual recoverable quantity through the approved process.

Example

Arithmetic example: a line with a ten-millimetre internal diameter and two-metre length holds about 157 millilitres when full, excluding fittings.

Scope and limits

Do not improvise pressure, air purging or solvent flushing to recover material. The supplier-approved equipment and handling procedure determine what can safely and appropriately be recovered.
