A Maintenance Reset for a Coated Car with an Unknown Product History

Reset maintenance on a coated car with an uncertain history through documentation, compatible cleaning and a staged baseline inspection.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A used car may arrive with claims of ceramic coating but no reliable product record. The goal of a maintenance reset is to establish a clean, documented baseline without pretending to identify an unknown coating from its water behaviour.

Collect what can be verified

Ask for invoices, installer details, application dates and any maintenance products used. Map PPF, repaired paint, matte finishes and other surfaces that need separate care. Record unknowns openly in the job sheet.

Start with conservative, suitable maintenance

Choose a process appropriate for the known substrate and observed contamination. Use small-area checks where necessary and avoid aggressive “stripping” claims. A strong wash does not provide universal proof that every previous coating has been removed.

After cleaning Next decision
Acceptable appearance and manageable care Maintain and monitor
Persistent specific contamination Assess a compatible targeted treatment
Paint defects requiring correction Agree paint assessment and correction scope
Unknown compatibility for new protection Resolve preparation and product selection first

Record a new baseline

Photograph the dry finish, map defects and note water behaviour under consistent conditions. Keep those observations descriptive. Beading may come from a coating, wax, sealant or maintenance product, so it cannot identify the chemistry by itself.

Avoid adding products before the question is answered

A topper may be appropriate for an agreed maintenance programme, but it changes the surface being evaluated. If it is applied, record the exact product and date. Do not then present the resulting beading as proof that an unknown underlying coating was restored.

Choose renewal deliberately

If a fresh coating installation is the best option, agree the preparation method for the actual paint and surface condition. Avoid unnecessary correction solely to satisfy a generic package.

The reset should end with a clear care routine, known products from this point forward and a review date. It replaces uncertainty with a usable record, while preserving the distinction between verified history and current observations.

Ask NANOLAB about your surface and intended use. For application and care, use the current instructions for the exact product.
