Comparing Coating Durability Reports with Different Maintenance Regimes

Compare coating durability reports by aligning maintenance, exposure and failure definitions instead of ranking the largest month count.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Two durability reports can quote the same observation period while describing very different systems. One coating may receive regular boosters, while another is assessed without added protection. Compare the maintenance regimes before comparing the headline duration.

Build a timeline for each report

Record application, cure conditions, cleaning events, targeted decontamination, added protection and inspections. Mark repairs or local polishing. Keep the measured endpoint visible: retained water behaviour is not identical to acceptable appearance or easier cleaning.

Report feature Comparison question
Maintenance spray Is the result for the base coating or maintained system?
Cleaning frequency Did samples face comparable maintenance exposure?
Storage and use Were environmental challenges similar?
Failure definition Did both reports stop for the same reason?

Do not subtract the topper mentally

If an additional product changes the surface, its contribution cannot be removed from the result by assumption. Describe the tested system accurately. A maintained programme can be useful to customers, but it should not be presented as an unmaintained base-coating result.

An illustrative comparison

Report A follows a coating for twelve months with regular maintenance applications. Report B follows another for eight months without them. The larger number does not establish that A’s base coating lasts longer. The reports may answer different customer questions.

Seek a common decision basis

Where possible, compare complete care programmes that customers can realistically follow. Include maintenance labour, products and accepted finish. If the objective is to isolate the coating, arrange a trial designed for that purpose rather than reinterpreting unrelated field reports.

State what remains unresolved

A report ending without failure provides a lower observed duration for the defined endpoint, not necessarily a completed lifetime. Missing maintenance records also limit interpretation.

The strongest recommendation explains which programme fits the intended use and what evidence supports it. A month count becomes meaningful only when the surface, care and failure definition travel with it.
