A Boat’s Mixed Materials: Build a Coating Exclusion Map

Create a marine coating exclusion map for functional and mixed-material areas so cosmetic protection does not spread beyond its approved scope.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A boat may combine gelcoat, paint, metal, plastics, glazing, rubber and fabrics within a small area. A coating plan should identify where treatment is approved and where it must stop, especially around functional surfaces.

Map by function as well as material

Material compatibility is only one question. Walking surfaces, controls, seals, bonding areas and equipment interfaces may have functional requirements that a cosmetic coating could affect. Obtain specific approval where needed rather than extending a hull-side treatment everywhere.

Zone Decision needed
Cosmetic hull or painted surface Confirm finish and product compatibility
Walking or grip area Preserve required traction and obtain specific suitability
Seal or bonding interface Confirm exclusion or approved treatment
Instrument or optical surface Follow equipment-specific requirements

Make boundaries visible in the work record

Use photographs and annotated drawings to identify included and excluded areas. Choose suitable masking and handling methods where needed. Do not rely on a colour-coded product name to tell an installer which surface is safe to treat.

Review the awkward transitions

Inspect around fittings, drains, decals and removable components. Plan how cleaning products and coating residue will be kept from excluded surfaces. Runoff and towel contact can cross a boundary even when the applicator does not.

A practical handover test

Ask another trained technician to explain the scope from the map alone. If they cannot distinguish a cosmetic panel from an adjacent grip area, improve the record before work begins.

Update after equipment changes

New fittings, replacement glazing or repaired sections can change the scope. Preserve the original record and add the new component’s material and treatment decision.

The owner should receive a concise map and care instructions for the treated zones. An exclusion is not an incomplete job when it protects a surface’s intended function. It is part of a professionally defined coating service.

Ask NANOLAB about your surface and intended use. For application and care, use the current instructions for the exact product.
