Bulk versus Filled Coatings: A Landed-Cost Worksheet for Brand Owners

Compare bulk and filled coating supply on a consistent usable-unit basis, including filling, packaging, losses and quality-control work.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

Bulk coating can appear cheaper when compared only by liquid price. Filled bottles include operations that the buyer must otherwise arrange. Compare the total cost of usable, saleable units under the same specification.

Build two complete columns

Bulk route Filled route
Liquid, transport and receiving Filled product and transport
Compatible bottles, closures and labels Confirmed included packaging components
Filling labour and equipment Receiving and any remaining finishing work
Losses, checks and rejected packs Checks and rejected or damaged packs

Use current quotations for the actual destination and project. Keep taxes, duties and compliance costs as confirmed inputs rather than guessed percentages.

Use usable output as the denominator

In a hypothetical example, a bulk route costs 1,800 currency units and produces 180 accepted packs, giving ten units per accepted pack. If the plan assumed 200 packs, dividing by that planned quantity would understate the cost at nine units.

Include residual liquid, setup loss and rejected packaging where they occur. Avoid double-counting a cost already included in a supplier’s filled-bottle price.

Assess operational capability

The buyer needs an appropriate filling process, compatible packaging, traceability and quality checks. Bulk supply is not automatically the better route for a business without those capabilities. Conversely, an established packer may have a credible reason to choose it.

Compare flexibility and risk

Review pack-size changes, lead times, stock exposure and responsibility for failures. Clarify which party approves packaging and who holds the batch record. These factors may outweigh a small difference in unit cost.

Request a like-for-like quote

Send the intended product, pack size, quantities, destination and required components to NANOLAB. Ask for the current supply options and responsibilities for each route.

The useful decision is not whether bulk is cheaper in principle. It is whether the buyer can deliver the required accepted pack at a lower total cost and with an appropriate level of control.
