Forecasting a New Coating SKU with Low, Base and High Demand Cases

Plan a new coating SKU with low, base and high demand cases that expose stock risk and the assumptions behind the first order.

Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge

A new coating SKU has little reliable sales history. A single forecast can hide how uncertain the first order is. Build low, base and high cases from explicit assumptions and use them to plan stock and follow-up decisions.

Start with buyers and usage

Estimate the number of active buyers, likely purchase frequency and units per order. Separate confirmed commitments from expressions of interest. A distributor asking for samples is not the same as a customer placing a repeat order.

A hypothetical monthly model

Case Active buyers Units per buyer Monthly units
Low 10 2 20
Base 20 3 60
High 30 4 120

These figures are examples. They show which assumptions create the range rather than predicting demand for a specific product.

Translate demand into stock exposure

Compare the proposed order with each demand case, lead time, usable storage period and cash constraints. Include launch samples and non-saleable stock separately. Do not assume every bottle ordered will be sold at the full intended price.

Define an early update rule

Choose what evidence will revise the forecast: activated installers, completed sample evaluations, paid orders and repeat purchases. Review at a consistent interval. Avoid increasing the forecast merely because the launch campaign attracted many views.

Keep supply flexibility visible

Confirm current minimums, pack options and lead times with the manufacturer. A smaller initial range or staged order may reduce exposure, but the commercial terms must be confirmed for the actual project.

For example, if the low case would leave stock idle for an unacceptable period, investigate a smaller opening commitment or stronger pre-launch validation. If the high case would create shortages, identify the trigger for a reorder before launch.

A three-case plan is useful because it connects uncertain demand to concrete actions. It should be updated as evidence arrives, not treated as a promise that the middle number will occur.
