Contact-angle measurement on a curved car panel requires more care than estimating an angle from a bead photograph.
Updated · NANOLAB Knowledge
Contact-angle measurement on a curved car panel requires more care than estimating an angle from a bead photograph. The local surface geometry, camera view and drop contour all matter. A numerical claim should come from a method suitable for that geometry, not a straight line drawn across an arbitrary image.
KRUSS describes image-based contact-angle analysis at the intersection of the drop contour and the surface baseline. On a curved panel, the relevant local surface direction must be represented correctly. Treating the entire bonnet as a flat baseline can introduce a geometric error.
Use an instrument and analysis method validated for the intended surface, following the manufacturer's guidance. Record liquid, drop application, cure age, cleanliness, location and timing. Do not assume that a phone photograph taken from above contains the side-profile information required by a particular method.
Repeat measurements at defined locations and report variability. A single unusually round bead is not a representative numerical result for a complete vehicle.
If a flat representative test panel is used instead, state that substitution and its limitations. It may make a controlled material comparison easier while failing to reproduce the vehicle's application, texture or exposure history. Do not present it as a direct measurement of every curved panel on the car.
For routine owner observations, photographs can still document water behaviour without assigning a precise contact angle. Keep that distinction clear in marketing and maintenance records. Measurement quality comes from a defined geometry, suitable equipment and reproducible procedure, rather than from making an ordinary bead image look technical with an angle annotation.
